w016 - About 2.jpg

Every summer, five writers across disciplines (poetry, fiction, non-fiction, translation, playwriting, comics, and more) are awarded residencies. 2026 applications will open mid-February.

The summer residency lasts for three weeks. It includes private use of one of our sculptural-architectural writing studios; room and board; reimbursement for travel to and from Pittsfield; and opportunities for local events, engagement, and discovery.

The Studios

The studios are rustic and open air; each one is the architectural interpretation of the original structure from which one of five American Renaissance authors wrote while in the Berkshires. Studios include a built-in desk, bench, and chair, and are each equipped with a rechargeable, portable electric outlet. Restrooms and a small kitchen are available for resident use in Melville’s barn at Arrowhead.

Room and Board

Residents reside on the campus of Miss Hall’s School. Two meals are provided per day, and the dorm is equipped with a kitchenette. Transportation is provided to and from the studios, which are also accessible by walking or biking. Limited transportation for local exploration is also provided. We also recommend bringing a car if possible.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit a 1-page Letter of Intent, a 10-Page Writing Sample, and a CV. Please read all residency details and note application length requirements before submitting!

Past Residents

We’ve hosted 35 writers-in-residence since 2017.
