The Mastheads + MCLA-IAH present: INSCAPES. Write a poem about where you live.

Tell me more!

  • An “inscape” is a term that describes the unique essence of a place. What defines the Berkshires for those who live here?

  • Write a couplet (a 2-line poem) about a specific place in Berkshire county. Each line should contain no more than 8 words. The place can be anywhere that resonates with you: a town, street, river, or mountain; a restaurant or corner store; a family member or friend’s house.

  • Why a couplet? Couplets are known for suggesting a call and response, or joining two opposing ideas into one. We know relationships to Berkshire County can be complicated. A couplet can contain it all.

  • Where will my poem go? Select INSCAPE poems will be featured in a short film with music by Ben Jaffe, and on billboards throughout Berkshire County this summer.

Here are some examples:

Curbside at The Bookstore

My kids yell “Matt” through the mail slot.

I hold my credit card to the glass.

First Date

I went to Pedrins last September

for my first date, we ate tenders.

Mount Greylock

We should hike Mount Greylock...

Driving up it sounds better.
